Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has officially been selected GQ’s 2017 Citizen of the Year while now slated to grace the cover of the magazine for its December issue.

The signal caller, who has been surrounded by controversy over the course of the last year, initially caused a stir when he kneeled during the national anthem last season while with the 49ers. Such an act ultimately caused an uprise of similar protests throughout the NFL, which remain a still a hot topic today.

Kaepernick is still a free agent while now claiming that he has been black-balled by the league’s owners.
