Clemson WR Deon Cain Suspended By Team

Doug Buffington

As originally reported by ESPNUpstate’s Price Atkinson, the Clemson Tigers have suspended three players for failed drug tests. The decision comes two days before the Tigers play the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl, on New Year’s Eve.

The most prominent player suspended is freshman wide receiver Deon Cain. Even though Cain has already missed two games on the season, he is second on the Tigers in receiving yards, trailing only sophomore Artavis Scott. Cain’s 17.1 yards per reception led Clemson this season. Cain also completed a pass attempt this season, which went for 35 yards. This past spring, Kevin Askeland at Yahoo surmised that Cain would be selected 12th overall if NFL teams could only draft among the nation’s incoming college freshmen.

The other players suspended by the teams are Ammon Lakip, Clemson’s back-up placekicker, and Jay Jay McCullough, a junior tight end who has eleven receptions over his three collegiate seasons, including none this year.
