We got the boxing excitement that we thought we’d get in May, it just came a week later than expected.
It wasn’t Mayweather-Pacquiao, but Canelo Alvarez provided plenty more fireworks with a third round knockout of James Kirkland on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
The win sets up a potential showdown for the middleweight championship against Miguel Cotto.
Alvarez knocked down the powerful Kirkland three times before the deciding knockout. He landed 58 percent of his punches, compared to just 21 percent for Kirkland.
Alvarez is now 45-1-1 with 32 knockouts. Kirkland falls to 32-2 with 28 knockouts.
Before Alvarez and Cotto can meet on HBO for the middleweight championship, Cotto has to beat former champion Daniel Geale on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The fight was held in front of about 40,000 fans at Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros.
