The Carolina Panthers throttled the Miami Dolphins, 45-21, on Monday night to move to 7-3 on the year. They’ve now rattled off their third straight win for the first time all season. Carolina scored 21 unanswered to pull away convincingly, with quarterback Cam Newton having his way against the Dolphins defense.
After just a field goal in the first quarter, Carolina’s offense got rolling as the game went on. Christian McCaffrey opened the touchdown flood gates in the second quarter with the second rushing touchdown of his career, which was also his second in as many weeks.
Newton threw his first touchdown pass of the game in the second quarter to Ed Dickson, before finding Devin Funchess, McCaffrey, and Funchess again before the night was out. He finished 21-for-35 as a passer for 254 yards through the air, collecting four passing touchdowns, while adding 95 yards on the ground, including a 69-yard run.
As Miami attempts to find a new running back in the wake of the Jay Ajayi trade, Kenyan Drake rushed for a score on seven carries, finishing the night with 82 yards. Jay Cutler and the Miami offense were able to get the game as close as 10-7 in the second quarter before they were unable to keep up with Newton and the Panthers.
Carolina is now rolling into its bye week next weekend. The Panthers return to the field on Nov. 26 for a road game against the New York Jets.
Miami is not afforded the luxury of a bye week all year, with next weekend being when the Dolphins were originally scheduled for a break. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, the Dolphins will play the Week 1 rescheduled game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.
