Today’s Fastbreak

Top Takeaways From Game 5 of the NBA Finals

The Golden State Warriors have a 3-2 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals and are on the verge of bringing home a championship for the first time since 1975.

Before Game 6 gets underway, Fastbreak’s Kelly Scaletta has three takeaways from Game 5 that you need to know before Tuesday’s elimination game.

Today’s Slapshot

NHL: SEP 16 Preseason - Red Wings at Penguins

Trading Anthony Mantha for Dion Phaneuf Would be Crazy

The Detroit Red Wings were reportedly interested in acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline. However, an unwillingness to part with top prospect Anthony Mantha killed the deal.

Now, the Red Wings are reportedly open to moving Mantha or their first-round pick if the right trade comes along. Slapshot’s Franklin Steele says even with the change of heart, Detroit should not move one of their best prospects for an aging defenseman whose style is slowly being phased out of the game.

Today’s Knuckleball

MLB: AUG 10 Red Sox at Angels

Can the Current and Former Best Players in Baseball Carry the Angels to a Playoff Berth?

The Los Angeles Angels have two of the best players in the game, outfielder Mike Trout (the best) and first baseman Albert Pujols (considered the best at one time). Are those two players alone enough to carry Los Angeles to the playoffs?

Knuckleball’s David Roberts says other players need to step around around those two All-Stars or else the Angels are in serious danger of missing the playoffs.

Today’s Pigskin

NFL: NOV 30 Bengals at Buccaneers

DE depth could hold the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back this season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a long way to go in order to get back into contention in the NFC and even the lowly NFC South. They finished with the NFL’s worst record at 2-14 and don’t stand to have that much better of a record in 2015, even with No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston at the helm.

Pigskin’s Jake Perper says poor depth on the defensive line could be the Buccaneers’ undoing, because pressure from the defensive line is essential in a Lovie Smith cover 2 defense. That unit was an area of concern last year and looks to be one again this season.

Today’s U

NBA: JUN 07 Finals - Cavaliers at Warriors - Game 2

The Golden State Warriors Will Change College Basketball

The phrase “it’s a copycat league” can be used to describe any of the major sports leagues, both collegiate and professional. Such is the case in the basketball world. The Golden State Warriors are on the brink of winning the NBA Finals with a small-ball lineup and college coaches are surely taking notice.

U’s Bobby Reagan says while there will always be plenty of differences between the NBA and NCAA basketball, the Warriors’ style of winning will change the landscape of college basketball.

Today’s Knockout

Junior Dos Santos is Back In Business

Since Cain Velasquez is no longer the UFC Heavyweight Champion, that opens up the door for Junior Dos Santos to challenge for the title. Dos Santos would not have been able to challenge Velasquez for a fourth time had he retained at UFC 188 on Saturday.

Knockout’s Dane Curley says: “Junior Dos Santos is the sort of elite-level striker that could beat the brakes off of Werdum. It’s the perfect style-match for him to reclaim his title. And it’s the match I hope the UFC makes.”
