Arsenal moves closer to signing Mohamed Elneny

Arsenal has taken one step closer to shoring up its midfield with the news that Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny has passed his physical and agreed to personal terms with the Gunners.

The Premier League leaders are buying Elneny from Basel for a reported $10.9 million to fill in while defensive midfielders Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla recover from injuries. Elneny can also play as a central midfielder or even in an advanced role.

The only obstacle remaining is a work permit. Normally, a non-European international would automatically be allowed to join an English team, but Egyptian players do not qualify since their national team is not in FIFA’s top 50. Arsenal is expected to be given a waiver, since Elneny is a first-choice player for the No. 57 team in the world, but that will add time to the transfer process.

Elneny, 23, started his career with El Mokawloon in his home country, then moved to Switzerland in 2013.
