MLB Today

Baseball fans or those northern folk looking for a respite from the cold and snow should make plans to catch the action from the Cactus League, which begins with five MLB teams playing today.

An odd number of teams might seem–well odd, but the first day won’t see any split squad games, instead the Arizona State Sun Devils will make the short trek to Salt River Fields to face the Diamondbacks for temporary Grand Canyon State bragging rights.

A Bay Area Battle is also in the works as Bruce Bochy and the defending world champion San Francisco Giants face the Oakland A’s in their new Spring Training home, HoHoKam Stadium, the park that until last year the Cubs called home. An all-Ohio Showdown will also take place in Goodyear on Opening Day in the Cactus League as the Reds and Indians square off in the facilities they share.  The same four teams square off again on Wednesday, while nine more clubs will make their spring debut including the Milwaukee Brewers playing host to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers at Maryvale Park.

The biggest draw in the Cactus League, and perhaps the team generating the biggest buzz in MLB circles, the Chicago Cubs host the A’s on Thursday. New manager Joe Maddon will certainly get a taste of that famed Chicago early season hope with several rousing ovations and a warm welcome from the Wrigley West (actually Cubs Park is called Sloan Park) faithful.
