The San Fransisco 49ers have hired Ran Carthon to be the team’s new director of pro personnel. In a statement released on the team’s official website, GM John Lynch said:

“We want to welcome Ran Carthon and his family to the 49ers. Ran has a clear vision for how he plans to run our pro personnel department, and was excited about the opportunity to blend his approach with ours. Having previously directed his own pro department, we expect Ran to hit the ground running and help us build the strongest roster possible.”

Carthon has half a decade of experience in the exact same position with the Rams, both in St. Louis and LA, having started there in 2012.

He is only 36 years old, and he started out as a scout with the Falcons back in 2008, in his mid 20s. The Falcons director of player personnel back then was Les Snead, who is now the GM with the Rams.

Essentially, his new job will just have him doing player evaluations. These will then be used to figure out who to pick up in free agency, which unrestricted free agents to target as that period draws near, and the like. If the 49ers are considering a trade, he’ll give his input, and he’ll also watch the waiver wire and help them decide when to put in a claim.

It’s a crucial job for a 49ers team that is rebuilding under new head coach Kyle Shanahan, and they hope his input can help them find the right pieces to get back in contention for championship titles.
