49ers bring in DL Kedric Golston for a workout

The San Fransisco 49ers had a workout with DL Kedric Golston, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area and the Houston Chronicle.

It’d be an interesting signing, if it happens. The 49ers are largely in rebuild mode and looking for younger pieces, but Golston is 33 years old and has been in the NFL for 11 years.

It would make sense for him, though. He’s just a rotational player who is looking for a job after going to IR with a hamstring injury two games into 2016. He probably wouldn’t mind playing for a team that likely won’t win a lot until after he’s gone, as long as it means he gets a job.

If that’s the case, he could be cheap, and then the 49ers’ interest makes more sense. He’s an experienced player and a locker room leader, a guy who could give them an instant option on the line and help lead and develop their younger players.

He’s 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 330 pounds. He also probably wouldn’t be a starter, which could help him stay healthy. The 49ers would just use him rotationally, as the Redskins did.

The 49ers are also simply looking into all of their defensive line options, so it’s unclear how much interest they have in Golston specifically. They brought in DE Cedric Reed and DE Carlos Wray, as well. Both are much younger, joining the NFL in 2015 and 2016. Neither have had much of an impact at the NFL level, however, while Golston has shown that he can play in the pros.
